Tiger Woods to make 2015 debut at Phoenix Open

Tiger Woods is going to the Valley of the Sun.
    The former
world No. 1 announced on his blog Friday that he will start 2015 in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The tournament, billed as the Greatest Show on Turf which annually attracts more than 500,000 people, is Jan. 29-Feb. 1.
Super Bowl XLIX will be played Feb. 1, 20 miles to the west in Glendale.
"It will be great to return to Phoenix," Woods wrote on his blog. "The crowds are amazing and always enthusiastic, and the 16th hole is pretty unique in golf."
Woods also committed to playing the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego the following week. Woods has won eight times as a professional at Torrey Pines.
"Torrey is a very important place to me," Woods wrote. "My pop took me there when I was younger, and I have a lot of special memories of watching the Tour play there when I was growing up."
Woods has not played in the Phoenix Open since 2001.
Woods has not won in Phoenix in four starts, but he had made some noise. In 1997 on the 16th hole, which now is surrounded by a stadium that seats 20,000, Woods made one of the most memorable aces in golf history. Two years later, he famously had members of the gallery move a boulder out of the way of his ball.
Woods, who was bothered by a bad back throughout 2014 and had back surgery March 31, last played in the Hero World Challenge in December, where his back was fine but his chipping was horrific as he tied for last place in the 18-man field
